Let's Talk About Customer Service on Curacao

Oh My, How Things Have Changed...for the Better!

It’s been 15 years since I waved goodbye to my island home to further my education, I always intended to return with visions of a political career or policy advisory work. Yet, Europe’s allure proved too tempting, and now the only scenario where I see myself returning is if I hit the lottery jackpot (or maybe one of my friends in Politics would be reading this would give me call?)

Back in the day, during my visits home, customer service in Curacao was what my British friend would diplomatically call "nothing to boast about." Let’s just say it wasn't the island’s claim to fame. If there’s one constant in life, it’s change. Climate change, political shifts, new names for old shops and restaurants, evolving music venues—you name it. Yet, through all this, the unwaveringly nostalgic customer service of Curacao remained a comforting constant. Until now, that is.

Customer service on Curacao has undergone a transformation, and for the better! In the past 15 years, I've observed some incredible changes during my visits to the same familiar haunts. Driven by routine, nostalgia, or convenience, I tend to keep visiting the same places.

Here are four delightful ways things have improved:

  1. Acknowledgement: Walk into a shop now, and staff actually notice your existence. They might even ask if you need anything—how novel!

  2. Friendly Greetings: Say "hello" and brace yourself for a responsive echo. The awkward silence of yesteryears has been replaced by genuine acknowledgment.

  3. Attentive Service: Instead of the old game of avoiding eye contact, staff now proactively ask if you need a refill when your drink is empty. Revolutionary, right?

  4. Valued Customers: Remember feeling like you had to beg to spend your money? That's history. Now, there’s a genuine appreciation for your business.

This is fantastic news for Curacao. Great customer service combined with the unique local charm makes the island an even more wonderful destination. And let’s not forget us locals—we reap the benefits too. More interest in going out, the joy of leaving tips for good service, and a sense that your money is well spent.

Looking forward to the upcoming years and seeing the Customer Service evolution evolve even more.
